DeRUSHA Download: Crime, Fear, Apostle Closing
$21 pastrami- is it worth it? Excelsior Gets 3 New Summer Spots and DT's 12 Steakhouses
DOWNLOAD DIALOGUE: REAL CRIME WORRIES V. FEAR-MONGERING
Brian Ingram has made a lot of noise since announcing the closing of Apostle Supper Club across from the X in downtown Saint Paul. He said the city “is simply not a viable place for small, independent restaurants to thrive” which is ridiculous, since his successful Hope Breakfast Bar is up the street on West 7th. Brian went on Fox News - the anchor was conflating Minneapolis crime, the Hennepin County Attorney, St. Paul, Ramsey County - it was a mess. I talked about it on WCCO - https://derusha.short.gy/CrimeYT.
Brian is right about vandalism and burglaries and downtown St. Paul. AND he’s wrong about the over-the-top, lock ‘em up forever, Fox News catnip rhetoric. Many restaurants are fed up with the bricks through the window and the brazen theft, and the fact that understaffed/overworked police don’t respond to these calls. They’re also afraid to complain, as they don’t want to be accused of “fanning the flames.” Justine Jones & Steph March don’t exactly accuse him of that, but they essentially accuse him of that in MSP [https://derusha.short.gy/MSPApostle]. I’m sick of the “don’t talk about crime because you’re hurting the cities” attitude - AND if you’re going to talk about crime going on national Fox News isn’t how I’d do it. MY TAKE: It sucks to have to deal with this BS as a business-owner AND Apostle wasn’t a good restaurant for that spot. No owner wants to take the blame, but I would respect the crime argument more, if there also was acknowledgement that the concept didn’t click, execution could have been better, pricing wasn’t in line with what the market wanted. Jester announces 2 new Excelsior concepts including ramen
Big restaurant news coming Monday
Mother’s Day Activities
STOCK & BOND: The name of the new steakhouse at the downtown Minneapolis Westin [formerly Bank.] The main Angus beef is coming from LINZ, the same people who supply Manny’s. Fellers Ranch, Cannon Valley Meats and Wild Acre will be on Chef John Sobojinski’s menu too. Cocktails with a Tattersall focus. Awesome room, I’m looking forward to it this summer. Manny’s, 801 Chop, Murray’s, Porzana, St. Pierre, P.S. Steak, Ruth’s Chris, Capital Grille, J.D. Hoyt’s and Stock & Bond all downtown/North Loop. If you count Butcher’s Tale, Butcher & The Boar - I count 12 steakhouses!
JAPANESE-STYLE RAMEN & SUPPER CLUB TO EXCELSIOR: JESTER CONCEPTS has announced what’s going above Parlour. Shiki will be a small, 30-seat, Japanese-style noodle bar focused on ramen & dumplings. Mirabelle feels like a supper club to me: “classic popovers, shrimp cocktail and nightly specials such as prime rib, meatloaf, Friday fish fry and lasagna.” Both open this summer - Skiki is lunch & dinner, Mirabelle is dinner only. David Fhima is also opening in Excelsior this summer with “Southern Italian and Sicilian classics: pizza… pasta… gelato.” MNMO: https://derusha.short.gy/jesterExcelsior
